Prostate Cancer Foundation – United States

The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) is the world’s leading philanthropic organization funding and accelerating prostate cancer research. Founded in 1993, PCF has raised more than $615 million and provided funding to more than 2,000 research programs at nearly 200 cancer centers and universities. The PCF global research enterprise now extends to 19 countries. PCF advocates for greater awareness of prostate cancer and more efficient investment of governmental research funds for transformational cancer research. Its efforts have helped produce a 20-fold increase in government funding for prostate cancer.

Taking on the task of being webmaster for PCF required handling every aspect of the web containing more than 2,200 pages for the U.S. site alone.

Some of my duties included the following – SEO (going from #29 to #5 on Google), Google Adwords, creating newsletters, adding new content on a daily basis, handling all social media postings, creating new campaigns to get more followers on Facebook and Twitter, using Content Management Systems such as Blackbaud, WordPress and Drupal, creating additional websites from scratch, as well as many other duties. You can view some of my accomplishments below.

Scientific Retreat

The Prostate Cancer Foundation hosts an annual Scientific Retreat that brings together the brightest minds in prostate cancer research in an effort to break down the traditional barriers that impede progress toward better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer. The Scientific Retreat has over 500 participants, from academia, government organizations, industry and non-profit organizations.

This invitation-only event attracts the best researchers, physicians, medical oncologists and is not just limited to people working directly on finding a cure for prostate cancer. Each year PCF invites brilliant minds from fields as diverse as computer science, bioinformatics, dentistry, neuroscience, engineering etc. to come together and share thoughts and ideas in a collaborative setting, taking us all a step further towards finding a cure for a disease that afflicts over 230,000 men in the United States alone.

One of our goals was to save trees and not have to print thousands of pieces of material, and give the participants a more interactive option. In 2013 I built a mobile site specifically for this event. In 2015 I took an additional step and built a mobile app that would allow other users to learn more about the attendees, connect with them, as well as rate presentations/speakers.

NewsPulse

One of my responsibilities at the Prostate Cancer Foundation is creating vibrant newsletters each month. It will contain images and brief descriptions of the stories from the best items that were posted on our website over the month. The images below show what some of the newsletters I have created over the years.

Other Sites I Manage

Social Media

When I came on board, I noticed that the social media presence was lacking. I decided to take on the responsibility of starting a campaign that would gain us more followers which in return would lead to more traffic.

On January 1, 2014 we had a total of 20,000 followers which took over 6 years to accomplish. Over the next year I was able to bring our total Facebook followers from 20,000 to 50,000, which was a 900% increase from the previous year.

This also brought an increase in traffic to pcf.org by more than 50% from the year before. The more people who are following us on Facebook will allow people to become more informed and help get more involved with the cause in bringing a cure to prostate cancer.
